Malaysia’s sensational sailfishing in full swing! – Rob Chang reports from Kuala Rompin

With peak season upon us the sails have turned up in droves over recent weeks. On a recent trip with local expats from the USA we released a total of 13 sailfish over 2 days and encountered a lot more.

Although the majority of sails were caught on bait, the sails were so thick we spent a lot of time casting poppers and stick baits at the feeding sails. For 15 strikes we had 6 hook-ups but no releases to account for our efforts. Popping the sails is an exciting way to target these billfish here in Malaysia and although a challenge, landing one is an exhilarating award for the effort.

So signs are good for the coming peak months of August/September and October. So we’ll keep you all posted of developments.

Happy to hear from you popping enthusiasts who have experienced success on landing sails on poppers.
