It seems like an odd combination from opposite ends of the world but last week’s Asia adventure perfectly combined Formula 1 Grand Prix racing, world class entertainment, abundant sailfish caught and dish after dish of superb cuisine and liquid refreshments!

Having the weekend Singapore stop over prior to fishing Rompin allowed some of us to relax and enjoy the city sight, others chose to shop and buy fishing tackle, clothes and gifts while others decided to get amongst the action at the F1 GP and party all night!

Needless to say we all had a blast, with both Singapore and Rompin delivering… The sailfish numbers on the grounds are incredible, we had sailfish swimming, free jumping & feeding around our 3 boats all week. They appear quickly and sometimes move on, with the birds signaling more fish coming in from all directions.

Live baits are the preferred technique, but my casting arm got a work out with 2 fish landed on stickbaits, with plenty more follows, strikes & dropped fish.

The same trip is now planned for next year with a Vanuatu team already confirmed we’ll be adding a few Aussie boats. If you’re keen for a unique trip with plenty of fish & fun, the September 2013 adventure will be a very cool trip…. To find out about getting onboard next years adventure, simply view more details here

An amazing effort by 12 year old Anton Jokovic to be the first angler ever known to land a Rompin sailfish on a Sabiki bait jig. Just part of an amazing 20 fish, 2 day session he shared last week!

His dad Vic had an awesome trip fishing Rompin back in May & really wanted to return this time with his son Anton. Vic’s first report can be read here!!

Anton was jigging for bait with a sabiki rig which a Megabass squid jig was tied to, a technique which can catch both bait and squid at the same time. Whilst bringing in some more bait destined for the live well, the estimated 25kg sailfish took the baitfish on his sabiki next to boatside…and then, all hell broke loose!

Using a Daiwa Certate 3500 with Majorcraft Offblow PE1.5-3 rod Anton showed great skill & did an amazing job to subdue the sailfish on such light gear.  The Sail managed to get it’s bill wrapped by the line itself with the squid jig happened to be at the side of it’s mouth when it came boatside.

Some might say it is the unluckiest sailfish in the South China Sea, but that isn’t what’s remarkable about this capture. Plenty of sailfish take live baits hooked on sabiki rigs just under the boat, these occurrences are indeed common in Rompin but typically ends all too quickly in a bust off.

In all his years fishing and guiding Rompin, this is the first sail landed on a sabiki rig reports Ocean Blue’s Asia Rep, Rob Chang.

In total Vic and Anton landed 20 Sails in 2 days, 5 double’s, 1 triple hook up and lost count of how many other fish were lost… Congrats again Anton and you now have a Megabass Squid jig as a souvineer of this capture. Can’t wait to hear what happens on your next trip to Rompin in a few months time.

While those of us back home are experiencing the big chill and the onset of another winter, Sydney angler Vic Jokovic spent the last weekend in May sailfishing the tropical waters of Kuala Rompin, Malaysia.

A whirlwind adventure, Vic’s schedule only allowed for 2 days fishing & he encountered first hand the world class sailfishing available at this unique sportfishing destination.

Last weekends trip delivered the usual superb conditions, sunny, hot and glassy waters offshore. Fishing solo, he had no less than 3 double hookups to contend with on day 1, what a start! Day 2 was more about honing techniques as the experience gained with this many opportunity presents an excellent learning curve for light tackle billfish anglers.

Trip was topped off by great local cuisine in town and excellent hospitality & Singapore door to door airport transfers by Ocean Blue Asia representative, Rob Chang.

The sails have now well and truly arrived and this September’s Adventure and the season ahead looks to be one of the best in a long time. Ocean Blue’s Kuala Rompin Sailfish trip is a blast and should be on the must-do list for any angler!

With peak season upon us the sails have turned up in droves over recent weeks. On a recent trip with local expats from the USA we released a total of 13 sailfish over 2 days and encountered a lot more.

Although the majority of sails were caught on bait, the sails were so thick we spent a lot of time casting poppers and stick baits at the feeding sails. For 15 strikes we had 6 hook-ups but no releases to account for our efforts. Popping the sails is an exciting way to target these billfish here in Malaysia and although a challenge, landing one is an exhilarating award for the effort.

So signs are good for the coming peak months of August/September and October. So we’ll keep you all posted of developments.

Happy to hear from you popping enthusiasts who have experienced success on landing sails on poppers.
