Marcello & Goliath, 68kg Dogtooth Tuna Landed on Silly String!
Having fished for over 30 years in various destinations across the world, the Ocean Blue live aboard mothership expedition was by far the best experience yet! Not only due to the amount of fish and variety of species we caught but the remoteness and beauty was something to behold. The luxurious mothership proved to be a welcoming sight everyday after a hard 12 hour session fighting massive dogtooth tuna, GT’s, marlin, wahoo, yellowfin and a plethora of reef species. The Battle: After my good friend George snapped his rod on an angry fish I felt obliged to give him my heavy jigging rod and Stella 20000 with 100 pound braid and 150 pound leader, which was the norm, though seldom stopped the monster dogtooth. I swapped to my new Diawa Saltiga 63s and Shimano Biomaster 10000 combo & proceeded to hook what I thought was a larger than average dogtooth tuna. After a grueling 45 min epic battle and nearly being spooled on more than one occasion, I caught my first glimpse. Shortly after, we were all screaming out ‘colour’ and it finally appeared from the deep and broke the surface – a huge 68kg dogtooth tuna, it’s more than a dream come true.
