Introducing Mercury Marines NEW Avator Electric Outboard Concept

Electric cars are growing in popularity and capability these days, but the marine world still relies on gas. The Mercury Marine Avator, an electric outboard motor, is set to change that. This has the potential to upend the marine propulsion industry!

Introducing the Mercury Marine Avator

Mercury has been in the industry for a long time and produces well-respected products. Anglers prefer their products for their longevity and performance. Mercury has now set their sights on the potential of electric outboard motors with the introduction of the Avator.

The Avator is positioned as a portable and quiet electric engine perfect for small crafts. Until now, the electric outboard market has been filled with many small players. With Mercury entering the game, anglers can rest assured that the same focus on their gas counterparts will make its way into the electric realm.

Electric motors carry a lot of benefits compared to their gas counterparts. Electric propulsion is quieter and costs less to “fuel” via recharging batteries. They often offer better performance in the same weight class.

Quiet Operation

The iconic sound of an engine revving as a boat skims over the water’s surface is easy to remember. Not so easily remembered is the hearing protection often recommended to operators of these engines. Preventing tinnitus is crucial for anyone working around loud equipment.

One of the key benefits of electric motors is their whisper-silent operation. Instead of constant drones and loud revs that can damage hearing, electric motors offer increased performance at a fraction of the volume.

It isn’t just your ears that will be thanking you. Fish are startled by and avoid loud noises. Reeling in that big catch requires a lot of patience and often a lot of silence too.

What We Know About the Mercury Marine Avator Electric Outboard

Though the announcement of this new engine sure is exciting, there’s limited information available. Mercury claims that battery life will be good and that fast charging will be a feature. We also know that they’re starting with low horsepower and entering the portable and small craft market.

We don’t yet know the potential top speed, maximum horsepower, or weight. Mercury is expected to release more information before releasing the model for public sale sometime late this year or early 2023.

Mercury claims this is their first step in moving towards an electric marine environment and that bigger and better developments will follow on the heels of the Avator.

The Avator won’t be the only electric offering from Mercury. President Chris Drees announced they aim to reduce emissions by 80% by 2025, indicating future products are in the pipeline. The electric outboard revolution is beginning!
